CUSTOM MINESWEEPER GUIDE
Create a Minesweeper board that fits your style
Play your own custom Minesweeper board
Choose the number of columns, rows, and mines, then start the board directly below. The familiar Minesweeper rules stay the same: reveal safe squares, read the numbers around them, and avoid every mine. Use the classic presets for a quick start or adjust each value yourself.
The first reveal is protected, including the nearby squares, so the game can open with a safe area. The remaining mine layout is created for that round in your browser.
How board width and height change a game
A smaller board gives you fewer squares to clear and is a good choice for a short round. A wider or taller board creates more space to explore and usually takes longer to finish. The Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert presets use the familiar classic board dimensions; custom settings let you move beyond them.
You can choose from 5 to 40 columns and 5 to 24 rows. Try a 7 × 7 Sprint for a quick round, a 30 × 8 wide board for edge clues, or a 40 × 24 Marathon for a longer session. The mine cap stays at or below 85% and also leaves room for the protected first-move area.
Mine density: a useful clue about difficulty
Mine density is the number of mines divided by the total number of squares. For example, 24 mines on a 16 × 10 board gives a density of 15%. Adding mines leaves fewer safe squares and can make deductions tighter, but density alone does not determine difficulty: the arrangement of mines and the clues you uncover also matter.
A safe first move does not promise a no-guess board. Some random layouts can still reach a position where the clues do not prove a single safe choice.
Custom games and leaderboard records
Custom games use the same mouse and touch controls as the standard game. Click a covered square to reveal it, right-click to flag a suspected mine, or press and hold a square on a touch screen.
Custom results are not sent to the server or added to the standard leaderboard. Since players can choose different board sizes and mine counts, their times would not be a fair comparison with Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert records.
